Cycle-of-Life Ceremonies

A new son or daughter?

We suggest you mark the occasion with a creative Jewish way to mark the occasion. You can enrich the Brit Mila ceremony with passages from the Bible or other sources, perhaps by explaining the meaning of the chosen name.

You can choose a medical mohel, who is a physician that has completed a course in performing Jewish circumcisions.

Of course, a more traditional Brit Mila ceremony can be performed instead.

For daughters, we suggest a ceremony called Zeved Habat, or Celebration of the Daughter, which is comparable to the Brit Mila without an actual circumcision. Through passages selected from ancient and modern sources the moment of giving a name to a new life can become an unforgettable event for everyone present.

For further information, please contact Rabbi Maya Leibovitch the congregation's office.

Pain and loss

Also at times of pain and loss we as an extended family would like the opportunity to share it with you and to comfort you. We invite you to inform us of each serious hospitalization or family loss. Our rabbi is available to visit you and to assist with burials (in kibbutzim), to provide additions to the traditional funeral service, to lead prayers in the bereaved home, to pray for healing the sick (Marpe Holim) and citing the person's name before the Small Kaddish (Kaddish Yatom) prayer, and for preparing a prayer service on the thirtieth day (Shloshim) after the death.

For more information please see the In Memoriam page with regarding the Shiva, the Shloshim and Yahrtzeit.

Getting married?

The bride need not be passive in the ceremony.
The ketuba need not be read in Aramaic.
The wedding ceremony can be truly meaningful, relevant, and memorable for everyone present.
At Rabbi Maya Leibovitch's ceremony, the wedding couple are active participants in the repeating the blessings, in writing the ketuba, and even in breaking the glass.
The rabbi meets with the couple, during which they review all the elements of a traditional ceremony and then compose a ceremony that is especially meaningful to them. If this style suits you, don't hesitate to contact Rabbi Maya Leibovitch to set up an appointment.

Bar/Bat Mitzvah workshop

Young members of the congregation prepare themselves for entering adulthood through enhancing their Jewish awareness and personal commitment to society.

The workshop includes 3 distinct aspects:
  • Familiarity with the world of Judaism -- 10 meetings with the rabbi.
  • Studying the intonations for reading the Torah.
  • 13 tasks -- Judaism through performing acts for society.

We use identical biblical texts for boys and for girls.

The families of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah boys and girls are asked to contact Rabbi Maya Leibovitch about five weeks before the event is to take place
